It has been a great winter for mountain biking within the club, with the Thursday night XC runs very well supported regardless of the weather, and with a small but growing group having regularly runs to Davagh and the local natural trails whenever possible.
Historically the club would have focused on road cycling from spring through to autumn but because of the interest over the winter, expanding the summer activities to include MTB runs seems the obvious choice.
Therefore, beginning April 26th, and trail conditions permitting, the club will commence some summer trail runs focused mainly on local forest trails but expanding beyond those local options as the evenings continue to lengthen. The first exploratory evening will use the runs around Ballykelly to gauge interest so anyone wishing to keep their MTBs active during the summer (centred on single track), meet up in the Ballykelly Jogging Trail car park (south side) at 7:00pm.
Subsequent club runs would expand towards Binevenagh and include Garvagh if it ever recovers from the winter activities of the Forestry Commission. Whilst the focus would be on trails/single track, some downhill and XC runs can also be incorporated. Expeditions further afield may be limited to a regular Sunday morning run (Davagh, Castlewellan, Blessingbourne, Rostrevor, ..) but a quick jaunt to Davagh is probably possible as the evenings lengthen. There has also been a mini-enduro series run by East Tyrone Cycling Club in previous years and sending a club contingent to participate is an option.
Its a fledgling idea so any and all feedback is welcomed, and regular support would be needed to keep it running. RVCC running it’s own mini enduro event for club members (initially) is an aspiration and something we can discuss and develop as the club runs gather pace.
